“More than a hundred million children under the age of six living in slums do not get quality education to prepare them for primary school and to be competitive in society”
(Breaking the Poverty Cycle, Hult Social Enterprise Challenge).
A key factor in helping to changing the cycle of poverty is education, and it begins with preschool.
Preschool is an important component in preparing children for school and beyond. Children younger than 5 years in developing countries are exposed to multiple risks, including poverty, poor health, and unstimulated home environments, which detrimentally affect their cognitive, motor, and social-emotional development. There is increasing consensus that the early childhood years set the foundations for later life.
Research and experience in Bangladesh and abroad show that preschool education has multiple benefits for children. It motivates and prepares children to attend primary school, provides parents with information about new approaches to education and prepares them to support their children’s schooling experience. DoPeace instills the habit of going to school and the value of education. We also take the responsibility to
take our pre-school graduates and admit them to the first grade in government schools which are free.
DoPeace.org innovative model is currently being implemented in four slums in Bangladesh: (1) Geneva and Market Camps located in Mohammadpur, Dhaka; (2) Mirpur Camps, Dhaka; (3) Saidpur Camps ; and (4) Rangpur Camps. As of January 1, 2015 we have implemented and planned education for 2500 children within the slum camps.
DoPeace.org was founded by Dr. Shahid Ahmed to provide education to children in the slums around the world. Dr. Ahmed grew up in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and has the first hand knowledge of the acute problems in the slums, particularly the abject poverty and lack of resources for children’s education.
